Archival Overview

Persian polymath who geometrically solved cubic equations using intersecting conics, designed the ultra-precise Jalali solar calendar, and penned the world-famous Rubaiyat.

Biographical Record

Ghiyath al-Din Omar Khayyam (1048–1131 CE) was an intellectual giant of Seljuk Persia. Commissioned by Sultan Malik-Shah I to build the imperial observatory at Isfahan, Khayyam created the solar Jalali Calendar, whose accuracy (an error of one day every 5,000 years) surpassed the modern Gregorian calendar.

In pure mathematics, his Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra achieved the first systematic geometric classification and solution of cubic equations through the intersection of parabolas and circles. His reflections on Euclid's fifth postulate anticipated non-Euclidean geometry. Globally celebrated for his poetic *Rubaiyat*, Khayyam was first and foremost a master of exact science.
