Biographical Record
Omar al-Mukhtar (1858–1931) was an esteemed scholar of the Senussi religious movement who spent decades teaching the Quran before Italian troops invaded Libya in 1911. Mukhtar organized mobile camel cavalry and guerrilla networks across the craggy cliffs and canyons of Jabal al-Akhdar (the Green Mountain).
Mukhtar repeatedly defeated Italian imperial generals, including Rodolfo Graziani, despite Italy's deployment of poison gas, tanks, air strikes, and barbed-wire concentration camps that starved 100,000 civilians. Wounded and captured in September 1931, the seventy-three-year-old lion stood proudly before an Italian drumhead court-martial, uttering his immortal declaration before being hanged.
