Guatemalan student leader and Secretary General of the AEU who was assassinated for defending university autonomy and human rights.
Biographical Record
Oliverio Castañeda de León was a charismatic student leader, human rights advocate, and Secretary General of the Association of University Students (AEU) at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala.
A passionate defender of university autonomy, labor rights, and democratic freedoms, Castañeda rallied tens of thousands of citizens against transit fare hikes and political disappearances during the brutal military regime of Fernando Romeo Lucas García.
On October 20, 1978, moments after delivering an impassioned speech commemorating the 1944 Revolution, he was shot dead by state-sponsored death squads on Sixth Avenue in Guatemala City, crying out his legendary warning: 'As long as there is a people, there will be revolution!'
