Biographical Record
Partially deaf and lacking formal university schooling, Oliver Heaviside (1850–1925) worked as a telegraph operator before retiring into reclusive mathematical research. He invented operational calculus to solve differential equations as algebraic problems and formulated transmission line equations.
In 1884, Heaviside recast James Clerk Maxwell's complex treatises into the clean, symmetric four differential equations taught today (Gauss's laws, Faraday's law, and Ampere-Maxwell law). In 1902, he predicted the existence of the atmospheric Kennelly-Heaviside reflecting layer.
