Archival Overview

English general and statesman who forged the disciplined "New Model Army" and led the Parliamentary forces to total victory in the English Civil Wars, overthrowing the monarchy to rule as Lord Protector.

Biographical Record

Oliver Cromwell (1599–1658) entered military service without formal training at forty-three, yet rapidly distinguished himself as a cavalry genius whose disciplined "Ironsides" maintained formation after charging, unlike the impetuous Royalist horsemen. Promoted to second-in-command of the New Model Army under Thomas Fairfax, he shattered King Charles I's forces at Marston Moor (1644) and Naseby (1645).

His stunning tactical victories at Dunbar (1650) and Worcester (1651) against superior Scottish and Royalist forces sealed parliamentary supremacy across the British Isles.
