Archival Overview

The first of Japan's "Three Great Unifiers" of the Sengoku (Warring States) period. Overthrew the Ashikaga Shogunate, revolutionized samurai tactics with volley-fire matchlock firearms at the Battle of Nagashino, and dismantled feudal economic barriers.

Biographical Record

Emerging from Owari province, Nobunaga shocked Japan in 1560 by crushing the massive invading army of Imagawa Yoshimoto at Okehazama. Recognizing the transformative power of European arquebuses (Tanegashima), he organized rotating firing lines behind wooden stockades at Nagashino in 1575.

He built the imposing Azuchi Castle on Lake Biwa, encouraged free trade markets (Rakuichi Rakuza), and patronized the tea master Sen no Rikyu before being betrayed by his general Akechi Mitsuhide at Honnō-ji Temple, committing seppuku amidst the flames.
