Archival Overview
Leading Norwegian Impressionist painter and iconic figure of the Kristiania Bohemia circle, renowned for luminous atmospheric portraits such as Ved Kristianiafjorden (Japansk lykt).
Biographical Record
Othilia Pauline Christine Lasson, known as Oda, was born on June 11, 1860, in Åsgårdstrand into an aristocratic legal family. Rejecting bourgeois convention, she studied painting under Christian Krohg and Erik Werenskiold, marrying Krohg in 1888.
Oda Krohg stood at the vibrant epicenter of the radical Kristiania Bohemia, revered as its muse, intellectual equal, and 'princess'. Her painting Ved Kristianiafjorden (Japansk lykt) (At the Christiania Fjord / Japanese Lantern, 1886) is considered a masterpiece of Nordic neo-romanticism, praised for its ethereal blue dusk and Japanese-inspired elegance. She exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, where she lived for over a decade.
