Archival Overview
Visionary Belgian art critic, jurist, and impresario who directed the avant-garde artistic societies Les XX (The Twenty) and La Libre Esthétique, making Brussels the capital of European modernism.
Biographical Record
After qualifying as an advocate in Brussels, Maus dedicated his fortune and intellectual passion to the arts. In 1883, he founded Les XX alongside twenty young painters including James Ensor and Fernand Khnopff, serving as the group's perpetual secretary and exhibition organizer.
Maus invited the greatest international innovators to exhibit in Brussels long before Paris accepted them: Vincent van Gogh (who sold the only painting in his lifetime, The Red Vineyard, at the 1890 Les XX salon), Paul Cézanne, Georges Seurat, Claude Monet, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
