Archival Overview

Eminent Nigerian nationalist and statesman who served as the first Premier of Western Nigeria, establishing universal free primary education and Africa's first television service.

Biographical Record

Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo was born on March 6, 1909, in Ikenne, Ogun State. Overcoming intense early poverty, he earned a Bachelor of Commerce and later studied law at the University of London, being called to the Bar at the Inner Temple. In London, he founded the Egbe Omo Oduduwa in 1945, which later transformed into the Action Group, a meticulously organized political movement dedicated to democratic socialism and regional federalism.

As Premier of Western Nigeria from 1952 to 1959, Awolowo introduced visionary reforms, including universal free primary education, free medical care for children, the establishment of the University of Ife, and the launch of Western Nigeria Television (WNTV), the very first television broadcasting service on the African continent. Later serving as Federal Commissioner for Finance during the Nigerian Civil War, he managed the economy without foreign loans. His political philosophy of 'Democratic Socialism' remains a benchmark of governance in Nigeria.
