Archival Overview
Oba of Lagos (1845–1851) who fortified Lagos with coastal artillery and heroically defended the island during the British naval Bombardment of Lagos on Boxing Day 1851.
Biographical Record
Kosoko was born around 1800 in Lagos into the royal dynasty of King Ologun Kutere. A fearless military commander and merchant prince, he ascended the throne as Oba of Lagos in 1845, establishing strict sovereign control over coastal lagoons and European trade.
When British naval consul John Beecroft demanded the surrender of port sovereignty, Kosoko defiantly rejected imperial ultimatums. On December 26, 1851, the Royal Navy launched a heavy amphibious bombardment against Lagos with warships HMS Bloodhound and HMS Teffer. Kosoko's artillery batteries and musketeers mounted ferocious resistance, inflicting heavy casualties on British marines before strategic withdrawal to Epe. Foundational to the history of Lagos, his palace at Ereko remains a historic monument.
