Transformative Oba of Benin known as Ewuare the Great who transformed Benin from a city-state into a vast maritime empire, rebuilt Benin City with massive earthwork moats, and patronized brass casting.

Biographical Record

Born Prince Ogun, Oba Ewuare (c. 1440–1473) seized power after a devastating civil war, taking the name Ewuare meaning 'the trouble has ceased.' He fortified Benin City with the colossal Benin Moats—a 16,000-kilometer network of defensive earthen ramparts longer than the Great Wall of China.

Ewuare conquered over 200 towns across southern Nigeria, established the royal guild of brasscasters (Igun Eronmwon), and initiated direct diplomatic contact with Portuguese explorer Ruy de Sequeira in 1472, inaugurating Benin's golden age.
