Archival Overview
Renowned 4th-century lexicographer and scholar from Khemissa (Souk Ahras), whose dictionary 'De Compendiosa Doctrina' preserved precious lost classical literature.
Biographical Record
Nonius Marcellus was a celebrated Peripatetic philosopher and grammarian born in Thubursicu Numidarum (modern Khemissa, near Souk Ahras, Algeria). Living during the fourth century AD, he dedicated decades of intensive scholarship to compiling 'De Compendiosa Doctrina', a 20-volume encyclopedia of Latin grammar, lexicography, antiquities, and archaic vocabulary.
Because Nonius cited hundreds of passages from lost Roman Republican dramatists, poets, and historians—including Ennius, Pacuvius, Accius, Lucilius, and Varro—his dictionary became one of the most vital rescue operations of world literary history, preserving priceless fragments that would otherwise have vanished forever.
