"Love in the Arab world is like a prisoner and an outcast; I want to free it with my poems."

Archival Overview

Syrian diplomat and poet hailed as the most celebrated contemporary Arab poet, renowned for his sensual romantic lyricism and searing political elegies following the 1967 Six-Day War.

Biographical Record

Nizar Qabbani (1923–1998) graduated in law in Damascus and served in Syrian embassies across Cairo, London, Madrid, and Beijing. In collections like 'Childhood of a Breast' (1948), he broke Arab cultural taboos by celebrating female romantic autonomy and sensual love in accessible musical verse.

Following the devastating 1967 Arab military defeat, Qabbani published 'Margins on the Notebook of Defeat', a blistering critique of Arab authoritarianism and military hollow rhetoric. After his Iraqi wife Balqis al-Rawi was killed in a 1981 embassy bombing in Beirut, his verse took on tragic elegiac weight.
