Revolutionary innovator hailed as the 'father of modern Persian poetry' whose 1922 poem 'Afsaneh' shattered classical prosody to create 'New Poetry'.
Biographical Record
Ali Esfandiari, world-renowned by his pen name Nima Yooshij, was born in the remote mountain village of Yush in Mazandaran. Educated at the French Saint Louis School in Tehran, where he read modern French symbolist poetry, he returned to his native Caspian forests to forge a revolutionary new aesthetic for Persian literature.
In 1922, Nima published his monumental poem Afsaneh (The Myth), which broke with the thousand-year-old rigid equal-hemistich meter of classical Persian poetry. Nima freed line lengths to follow the natural rhythm of thought and emotion, giving birth to She'r-e No (New Poetry) and mentoring titans like Ahmad Shamlou and Sohrab Sepehri.
