Nilton Santos

Nílton dos Reis Santos was born on Ilha do Governador in Rio de Janeiro. Joining Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas in 1948, Nilton Santos remained a one-club man for his entire 16-year career, making 721 appearances for Botafogo alongside fellow icons Garrincha, Didi, and Zagallo. At a time when full-backs were strictly ordered never to cross the halfway line, Nilton Santos possessed the technical elegance of a playmaker and redefined the position.

During the 1958 World Cup match against Austria, Nilton Santos famously intercepted a pass, ignored the frantic screams of coach Vicente Feola to pass the ball back, and dribbled past three Austrian players across the entire length of the pitch before chipping the goalkeeper to score a stunning goal. Feola threw up his arms and declared: 'Well, good job, Nilton!'

Nilton Santos was the defensive brain of the Seleção, earning 75 caps for Brazil. He was an integral starter in the 1958 World Cup triumph in Sweden and defended the title at age thirty-seven in Chile in 1962, earning universal acclaim from Pelé, who described him as his defensive mentor. In 2017, Botafogo's Olympic Stadium was officially renamed the Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos in his honor.
