Biographical Record
Nikolay Basov (1922–2001) served in World War II before joining the Lebedev Physical Institute in Moscow. In 1954, alongside Prokhorov, he formulated the theoretical basis for quantum amplification of microwave radiation using molecular ammonia beams.
Basov subsequently proposed semiconductor lasers, excimer lasers, and pioneered high-power chemical lasers for controlled thermonuclear fusion experiments, establishing modern optoelectronics and quantum optics.
