Nikolai Lobachevsky (1792–1856) served as professor and transformative rector of Kazan University. In 1826, he presented a revolutionary mathematical system in which Euclid's fifth postulate (the parallel postulate) did not hold, demonstrating that multiple parallel lines can pass through a point without intersecting.
Though ridiculed by conservative contemporaries, Lobachevsky's hyperbolic geometry proved mathematically rigorous and self-consistent, revolutionizing human conceptions of spatial reality and providing the mathematical fabric for modern curved spacetime physics.
