Archival Overview
Distinctive Norwegian painter and innovative printmaker who immortalized the lush, mystical landscapes and Midsummer bonfires of Jølster in Western Norway.
Biographical Record
Nikolai Johannes Astrup was born on August 30, 1880, in Bremanger and grew up in the parsonage at Ålhus in Jølster. Defying his clergyman father's wish that he enter the ministry, he studied art in Kristiania and Paris under Christian Krohg before returning permanently to Jølster.
Astrup developed an intensely personal visual style blending folk art, Japanese woodblocks, and rich Nordic expressionism. He became famous for monumental paintings of Midsummer bonfires (Jonsokbål), lush apple orchards, and the dramatic mountains reflecting in Lake Jølstravatn. An inventive printmaker, he hand-colored each of his woodcuts individually, creating unique masterworks celebrating the mystical vitality of Norwegian nature.
