"The present is theirs; the future, for which I really worked, is mine. If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration."

Archival Overview

Serbian-American inventor and electrical genius who patented alternating current (AC) polyphase power, designed the induction motor, and pioneered radio, remote control, and high-frequency coils.

Biographical Record

Nikola Tesla (1856–1943) studied engineering in Graz and Prague before emigrating to the United States in 1884. Tesla patented the polyphase alternating current (AC) system and AC induction motor, partnering with George Westinghouse during the 'War of Currents' against Thomas Edison's DC power.

Tesla's AC polyphase system lit the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition and powered the world's first large-scale hydroelectric station at Niagara Falls in 1895. He invented the Tesla coil, demonstrated radio communication and radio-controlled robotics in 1898, and pursued wireless energy transmission at Wardenclyffe. The SI unit of magnetic flux density (tesla, T) honors his genius.
