"The guitar does not need words; each note must sing with the clarity of a raindrop falling into the river."

Archival Overview

Virtuoso musical genius hailed as 'Dr. Nico' and 'The God of the Guitar', whose dazzling fingerpicking technique and Hawaiian lap-steel solos with Grand Kallé and African Fiesta defined Congolese rumba.

Biographical Record

Nicolas Kasanda wa Mikanza was born on July 7, 1939, in Mikalayi. Graduating as a technical teacher at age fourteen, his prodigious guitar talent led him straight into Grand Kallé's legendary orchestra African Jazz.

In 1960, his electric guitar drove the historic independence anthem Indépendance Cha Cha recorded in Brussels. Forming 'African Fiesta' and later 'African Fiesta Sukisa', Dr. Nico revolutionized African guitar playing: introducing melodic Hawaiian slide, subtle pedal effects, and lightning-fast solos. Jimi Hendrix visited him in Paris in 1968 to pay tribute to his virtuosity.
