Archival Overview
Groundbreaking American actress and civil rights pioneer who shattered racial barriers as communications officer Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in Star Trek (1966–1969) and later recruited the first American women and minority astronauts for NASA.
Biographical Record
Grace Dell "Nichelle" Nichols was born in Robbins, Illinois, and toured as a dancer and singer with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton before being cast in 1966 by Gene Roddenberry as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura aboard the USS Enterprise in Star Trek. Her portrayal of a capable, dignified Black bridge officer in space was unprecedented on American television.
When Nichols planned to leave the show to return to Broadway, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. personally convinced her to stay, calling her role vital because "for the first time, our children are seeing us as we should be seen." In 1968, her onscreen kiss with William Shatner's Captain Kirk broke racial television taboos. In 1977, Nichols affiliated with NASA to recruit women and minority candidates, successfully bringing future astronauts Sally Ride, Guion Bluford, and Mae Jemison into the space program.
