Biographical Record
Nguyễn Phú Trọng (1944–2024) was the dominant architect of modern Vietnam's political landscape for over a decade. A scholar of Marxist-Leninist thought and former editor-in-chief of the Communist Review, Trọng rose through Party ranks to become Chairman of the National Assembly before his election as General Secretary in 2011.
He launched the \"blazing furnace\" (đốt lò) anti-corruption campaign, which targeted thousands of officials, cabinet ministers, corporate tycoons, and senior Politburo members, significantly curbing graft and cementing Party discipline.
Internationally, Trọng pioneered Vietnam's celebrated \"bamboo diplomacy\"—characterized by strong roots, flexible branches, and pragmatism—skillfully balancing relations between the United States, China, and Russia while propelling rapid national economic expansion.
