Archival Overview
Pioneering abstract painter of Tunisian and Dutch descent whose iconic geometric abstractions synthesized traditional medina arches and cubic rooftops with contemporary international minimalism.
Biographical Record
Nejib Belkhodja was born in the medina of Tunis to a notable Tunisian father and Dutch mother. Finding early figurative painting too limiting, he developed a radical abstract visual grammar derived from the architectural lines of the Tunis medina.
His celebrated canvases deconstructed horseshoe arches, whitewashed facades, and decorative mashrabiya latticework into pure, luminous geometric shapes. Awarded the Grand Prix national des arts plastiques, his works are displayed in leading international modern art museums.
