Biographical Record
Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana was revered across the Mazowe Valley as the living medium of the ancestral spirit Mbuya Nehanda. When the British South Africa Company instituted brutal hut taxes and seized ancestral land, Nehanda mobilized the Shona people in the 1896-1897 First Chimurenga (war of liberation).
Her spiritual authority united fractured Shona chiefs into an effective armed guerrilla network that shook British colonial rule. Captured in late 1897, she refused Christian conversion before being hanged, famously prophesying: 'My bones shall surely rise again!'
