Biographical Record
Ascending the throne with the aid of Spartan king Agesilaus II, Nectanebo II defended Egypt against early Persian invasions with great tactical success. He dedicated enormous resources to building temples, including the Isis temple at Philae and the magnificent granite temple of Isis at Behbeit el-Hagar.
In 343 BCE, a massive Persian army led by Artaxerxes III outmaneuvered Egyptian defenses at Pelusium. Nectanebo retreated to Memphis and then fled south into Nubia, leaving behind a legendary reputation as a scholar-magician celebrated in the Alexander Romance.
