Archival Overview
1st-century BCE ruling Queen of Kush at Meroë, celebrated in archaeological temple reliefs for her independent female sovereignty, elaborate royal regalia, and patronage of sacred shrines.
Biographical Record
Queen Nawidemak ruled the Kingdom of Kush during an era of tremendous architectural and cultural flourishing. She is documented on the walls of her burial chapel in pyramid Bar. 8 at Jebel Barkal and on commemorative steles written in the Meroitic cursive script.
Reliefs depict her wearing the tri-fold royal headdress, ceremonial beaded sashes, and breastplates, performing sacred offerings before god Amun of Napata and Osiris without a male co-ruler, illustrating the extraordinary political supremacy enjoyed by ruling Kandakes in ancient Sudan.
