Biographical Record
Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was born in Kuwait City, the sixth son of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the 10th ruler of Kuwait. Beginning his public service in 1962 as Governor of Hawalli Governorate, Sheikh Nawaf served in key national defense and security positions for nearly six decades, including Minister of Interior, Minister of Defense, and Deputy Chief of the National Guard.
Appointed Crown Prince in 2006 by his half-brother Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Sheikh Nawaf ascended to the throne as Emir of Kuwait upon Sheikh Sabah's death in September 2020. Ascending at age 83 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and sharp oil price declines, Emir Nawaf was revered for his personal humility, piety, and aversion to political ostentation. He defused bitter legislative impasses between the elected National Assembly and appointed cabinets by issuing landmark royal amnesty decrees in 2021 and 2023, pardoning dozens of exiled opposition figures and restoring domestic harmony.
