Biographical Record

Naum Gabo studied civil engineering, mathematics, and natural science in Munich before turning to sculpture. With his brother Antoine Pevsner, he issued the historic 'Realistic Manifesto' in Moscow in 1920, asserting that space and time are the only two fundamental elements through which life and art are constructed.

Gabo pioneered kinetic sculpture, creating his 'Kinetic Construction (Standing Wave)' in 1920 using an oscillating steel blade powered by an electric motor. He championed modern industrial plastics, celluloid, and taut nylon monofilament to build weightless, transparent constructions that made empty space palpable.
