Natalia Goncharova was a towering leader of the pre-revolutionary Russian avant-garde, co-founding the Donkey's Tail and Jack of Diamonds artist collectives with Mikhail Larionov. Deeply rooted in Russian folk prints (lubok) and Orthodox icon painting, she fused primitive visual vitality with European modernism.

In 1912, Goncharova and Larionov launched Rayonism (Luchizm), depicting intersecting rays of light reflecting off objects. In 1914, Sergei Diaghilev recruited her for the Ballets Russes, where her dazzling, folk-inspired sets and costumes for Stravinsky's 'The Golden Cockerel' and 'The Firebird' brought her worldwide acclaim in Paris.
