Armenian-born Byzantine court eunuch and master military commander who, at the age of seventy-four, crushed the Ostrogoths and the Franco-Alemannic invasion, completing the reconquest of Italy.

Biographical Record

Narses (c. 478–573 CE) rose through the imperial court to become Emperor Justinian's most dependable general. Assuming command in Italy in 552 CE, he defeated the Ostrogothic king Totila at the Battle of Taginae by forming an innovative crescent defensive line of dismounted men-at-arms flanked by 8,000 horse archers.

Following his triumph at Mons Lactarius and the destruction of 30,000 Frankish invaders at the Battle of the Volturnus (554 CE), Narses governed Italy as exarch from Ravenna, restoring Roman civic administration.
