Archival Overview
Founding Pharaoh of the First Dynasty who united Upper and Lower Egypt into the world's first centralized nation-state in 3100 BCE, immortalized on the iconic Narmer Palette in Cairo.
Biographical Record
Narmer (identified in classical Hellenistic chronicles as Menes) marched from the Upper Egyptian capital of Nekhen to unite the Nile valley with the marshy delta of Lower Egypt around 3100 BCE. Wearing the White Crown of the south and the Red Crown of the north, he created the unified Pharaonic dual monarchy.
He founded the imperial capital of Ineb-Hedj (Memphis) at the balance point of the Two Lands, diverted the course of the Nile with monumental dykes, and instituted the divine kingship ritual tradition. His ceremonial cosmetic palette, discovered at Hierakonpolis, stands as one of humanity's foundational historical documents.
