Biographical Record
Narasimhadeva I, nicknamed Langula ('The Valiant'), was a brilliant military general. Faced with aggressive incursions from the Delhi Sultanate's governors in Bengal, he went on the offensive, routing the armies of Tughral Tughan Khan at the Battle of Katasin in 1244 and annexing southern Bengal territories.
To celebrate his military victories and express ardent devotion to Surya the Sun God, he marshaled 1,200 master sculptors over twelve years to construct the gigantic Konark Sun Temple. Sculpted as a celestial stone chariot with twenty-four intricately carved wheels pulled by seven galloping horses, Konark remains a supreme achievement of Kalinga architecture.
