Biographical Record
A star pupil of Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose (1882–1966) was appointed director of Kala Bhavana (the art institute at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan) by Rabindranath Tagore in 1922. He synthesized traditional Indian folk art, Ajanta wall murals, and East Asian calligraphy into bold public murals.
A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, Bose decorated the Congress pavilions at Faizpur and Haripura with vigorous tempera posters of rural village life. Following independence, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru commissioned Bose to illustrate the original handwritten Constitution of India.
