Archival Overview
Pioneering 'Father of Modern Arab Comedy', creator of the satirical rural archetype 'Kish-Kish Bey', and playwright whose humanist stage satires laid the foundation for 20th-century Arab theatrical arts.
Biographical Record
Born in Cairo to an Iraqi-Christian father and Egyptian mother, Naguib el-Rihani worked as a clerk in the sugar refineries of Upper Egypt where he observed the daily comedies and struggles of Egyptian fellahin (peasants) and minor bureaucrats. Moving to Cairo theater, he co-founded the legendary Casino de Paris troupe with Badia Masabni.
Collaborating with playwright Badi' Khairi, he invented the immortal comic persona 'Kish-Kish Bey'—the shrewd, naive provincial mayor confronting urban pretension. His cinematic masterpiece *Ghazal Al-Banat* (The Flirtation of Girls, 1949) remains the supreme classic of Egyptian comedy.
