Archival Overview

Founder of the Afsharid Dynasty of Iran celebrated as the 'Sword of Persia' and 'Napoleon of Persia', who liberated Iran from Afghan occupation and seized the Peacock Throne and Koh-i-Noor diamond in Delhi.

Biographical Record

Born into the nomadic Afshar clan, Nadir Qoli (1688–1747) rose to become supreme military commander, expelling Afghan occupiers and Russian and Ottoman invaders to restore Safavid borders. In 1736, he convened a grand assembly of notables (Moghan plain) to crown himself Shah of Persia.

In 1739, Nadir invaded the declining Mughal Empire. At the Battle of Karnal, his swiveling camel-mounted swivel guns (zamburak) decimated Mughal forces. He occupied Delhi, capturing the legendary Peacock Throne, the Koh-i-Noor diamond, and the Daria-i-Noor diamond, funding three years of tax exemptions across Iran.
