Thirteenth-century Catalan rabbi, physician, and kabbalist. Defended Judaism with extraordinary courage in the Disputation of Barcelona before King James I of Aragon, authored a mystical commentary on the Torah, and revitalized Jewish life in Jerusalem.

Biographical Record

Serving as communal leader and physician in Girona, Ramban integrated French Talmudic analysis with Spanish biblical scholarship and early Kabbalistic mysticism. Commanded in 1263 to debate apostate friar Pablo Christiani, his brilliant defense earned praise from the king but forced his exile under Dominican pressure.

Arriving in desolate Jerusalem in 1267 following Crusader and Mongol ravages, he gathered surviving elders to erect the historic Ramban Synagogue in the Old City, completing his monumental Torah commentary in Acre before passing away on Mount Carmel.
