Biographical Record
Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundtvig was born on September 8, 1783, in Udby parsonage, Zealand. Studying theology in Copenhagen, he became a fiery advocate of Norse mythology and living spiritual Christianity over dead ecclesiastical formalism.
Grundtvig formulated the revolutionary concept of 'the living word' (det levende ord) and championed education for ordinary citizens rather than elite rote academics, founding the Folk High School (Folkehøjskole) movement that transformed Nordic democracy. He authored over 1,500 hymns, including 'Kirken den er et gammelt huus', and served in Parliament, proclaiming his enduring ideal: 'A society where few have too much and fewer too little.'
