Biographical Record

Muzio Clementi was a child prodigy in Rome who was sponsored by wealthy English aristocrat Peter Beckford to complete his musical studies in Dorset, England. In 1781, Emperor Joseph II organized a legendary piano duel in Vienna between Clementi and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; while Mozart criticized Clementi's mechanistic passages, Clementi praised Mozart's soulfulness.

Clementi tailored his compositions specifically for the developing hammer action and dynamic range of the modern grand piano. As a founder of Clementi & Co. piano manufacturers, publisher of Beethoven's works, and author of 'Gradus ad Parnassum', he educated an entire generation of 19th-century pianists.
