Archival Overview
Heroic military commander and chief counselor of the Bailundo Kingdom who led the massive 1902 Bailundo Revolt against Portuguese colonial forced labor and trader abuses.
Biographical Record
Mutu ya Kevela was born around 1860 in the Bailundo kingdom. Serving as the chief general (Kesongo) and prime minister to King Kalandula, he witnessed the devastating exploitation of Ovimbundu villagers forced by Portuguese traders and colonial troops into debt slavery and rubber porterage.
In April 1902, Mutu ya Kevela organized a united coalition of central Angolan kingdoms, launching the Bailundo Revolt. Overwhelming Portuguese trading posts and military garrisons across the plateau, his forces besieged Fort Bailundo for months before modern Portuguese artillery and machine guns crushed the uprising. Kevela died fighting bravely in the fortress of Halavala, immortalized as one of Angola's supreme anti-colonial resistance martyrs.
