Mustapha Zitouni (1928–2014) was universally recognized in the late 1950s as one of the greatest central defenders in the world, playing for AS Monaco and commanding the French national team, having neutralized stars like Alfredo Di Stéfano. He was selected to start for France in the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden.
On April 13, 1958, following a secret directive from the FLN, Zitouni and nine other Algerian players staged an audacious clandestine flight to Tunis. Sacrificing fame, immense wealth, and a certain World Cup medal, Zitouni became the defensive rock of the 'Onze de l'Indépendance' (FLN Football Team), playing ninety-one international matches across Europe, Asia, and Africa to rally international public opinion for Algerian independence.
