Biographical Record
Mustapha Laliam was born in Relizane and completed advanced medical studies in Paris. In May 1956, following the historic UGEMA university strike, he and his wife, Dr. Babette Laliam, abandoned European comfort to climb into the Djurdjura mountains and treat the combatants of Wilaya 3.
He served alongside Dr. Nefissa Hamoud, performing amputations and emergency surgeries under fire with rudimentary tools. After the war, he established the neurology department at the Mustapha Pacha University Hospital in Algiers, training generations of Algerian neurosurgeons.
