Archival Overview
Long-serving Grand Vizier of Tunisia who governed the Beylik for nearly four decades (1837–1873) during the abolition of slavery, modern constitutional reforms, and European debt crises.
Biographical Record
Born Georgios Kalkias Stravelakis on the Greek island of Chios, he was captured during the 1822 massacre and purchased by the Bey of Tunis, where he converted to Islam and rose to royal treasurer (Khaznadar). He served three successive Beys as Grand Vizier for 36 years.
His administration oversaw the historic abolition of slavery in 1846 and the promulgation of the Fundamental Pact of 1857 and Constitution of 1861, before foreign loans led to state bankruptcy and his replacement by reformist rival Kheireddine Pasha in 1873.
