Archival Overview
Visionary founding director of Algerian television drama, whose 1974 masterpiece 'L'Incendie' (The Fire) brought colonial rural realities to millions of viewers.
Biographical Record
Mustapha Berkoune, known artistically as Mustapha Badie, was a resistance militant in the PPA who began directing radio dramas in the 1940s. Following independence, he joined the Radiodiffusion Télévision Algérienne (RTA) as its premier creative director of television fiction.
In 1974, Badie directed the monumental television series 'L'Incendie', based on the trilogy of Mohammed Dib. The series was a cultural phenomenon: streets across Algeria emptied during broadcasts. His uncompromising neo-realist lens discovered acting legends Shafia Boudraa, Biyouna, and Ezzeldin Medjoubi, laying the foundation for modern Algerian television.
