Biographical Record
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938) demonstrated legendary tactical resolve at Gallipoli in 1915, ordering his men at Chunuk Bair: "I do not order you to attack; I order you to die!" His counter-assaults drove British and ANZAC forces into the sea, saving the Dardanelles.
Following Ottoman collapse, he launched the War of Independence from Samsun, organizing the Grand National Assembly. Halting Greek forces at Sakarya (1921) and winning the Great Offensive at Dumlupınar, he abolished the Sultanate and forged a modern, secular, democratic Turkish republic.
