Archival Overview
Ninth Husainid sovereign who preserved Tunisian territorial integrity during the Ottoman reconquest of Tripoli and the French expansion in eastern Algeria, laying foundations for the Bardo military academy.
Biographical Record
Mustafa Bey succeeded his brother Husayn II in 1835. His brief two-year reign was characterized by delicate neutrality as Ottoman forces reasserted direct control over neighboring Tripoli and French troops pressed eastward from Constantine.
Mustafa Bey maintained Tunisian sovereignty by reinforcing the Regency's garrisons and initiated military reforms that his son and successor Ahmad I Bey would aggressively expand into the École Militaire du Bardo.
