Biographical Record
Musa Ćazim Ćatić was born on March 12, 1878, in Odžak. After studying Islamic law in Istanbul and attending the Law Faculty in Zagreb, Ćatić lived a restless, bohemian literary life, working as editor of the cultural journal Biser in Mostar.
A master of Arabic, Persian, and Turkish, Ćatić translated numerous masterpieces of Ottoman and Persian literature while authoring sublime original sonnets exploring the eternal duality of spiritual ecstasy and earthly eroticism. Mobilized into the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I, he contracted acute tuberculosis and died in Tešanj in April 1915 at age thirty-seven. His portrait graces the 50 convertible mark banknote.
