Archival Overview
Muradid Bey of Tunis (1666–1675) who restored the ancient Roman aqueduct of Zaghouan to bring fresh spring water to Tunis and founded the Medersa Mouradia.
Biographical Record
Murad II Bey succeeded his father Hammuda Pasha. A cultured sovereign with a passion for public architecture, he undertook the restoration of the ancient Roman aqueducts of Zaghouan, ensuring that clean drinking water flowed directly to the public fountains, baths, and palaces of Tunis.
In 1673, he founded the Medersa Mouradia in the Souk el-Kmach, dedicated to the study of Maliki jurisprudence. His premature death in 1675 precipitated the tragic civil conflict known as the 'Revolutions of Tunis' among his sons.
