Corsican-born founder of the Muradid Dynasty of Tunis (1613–1702), who transformed the office of Bey from a military tax-collector into a hereditary monarchy recognized by the Ottoman Sultan.
Biographical Record
Jacques Senti, born in Corsica, was captured at sea by Tunisian corsairs and entered the service of the Dey of Tunis, adopting the name Murad. Demonstrating exceptional administrative competence and diplomatic finesse, he was entrusted with commanding the biannual *Mahalla*—the armed expedition sent to collect taxes and maintain order among the tribes of the interior.
In 1613, Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I granted Murad the title of Pasha and recognized his hereditary right to the Beylik. Murad founded the Muradid Dynasty, pacified the country from the Medjerda to the Djerid, and established domestic stability that lasted for a century.
