Archival Overview
Third Ottoman Sultan who transformed the Ottoman state into an empire, instituted the Devshirme and Janissary corps, conquered Adrianople (Edirne), and died victorious at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389.
Biographical Record
Murad I (1326–1389), styled 'Hudavendigar' (The Sovereign), succeeded Orhan in 1362. Expanding aggressively into the Balkans, he conquered Adrianople in 1362, renaming it Edirne and making it the European capital of the empire. He established the 'Devshirme' system of recruiting and training elite Christian youth into the imperial Janissary corps.
On June 15, 1389, Murad confronted Prince Lazar's coalition of Serbian, Bosnian, and Albanian knights at the Battle of Kosovo. After a day of ferocious slaughter, the Ottoman forces crushed the Christian army. While inspecting the battlefield after victory, a wounded Serbian knight, Milos Obilic, lunged from the dead and mortally stabbed the Sultan.
