Biographical Record

Makhado succeeded his father Ramabulana as king of the Vhavenda in 1864, ruling from his impregnable mountain fortress of Luatame in the Soutpansberg mountains. Recognizing the threat posed by Boer Voortrekkers, he equipped his warriors with modern firearms through ivory trade.

In 1867, Makhado defeated the Boer settlers and forced the complete evacuation and destruction of the Boer town of Schoemansdal. He successfully resisted all Boer Republic attempts at conquest, ensuring Venda independence remained intact until after his death.
